By-election results spoils British PM’s first anniversary
July 2, 2008
Exactly 12 months since Gordon Brown took over from Tony Blair he received an unpleasant present in the form of results of the by-election. It was assumed that the Labour Party would romp home in the by-election, but that proved to be a far cry. Honestly nobody would have imagined that the party’s performance would be so bad and that its candidate would be at the fifth position.
A recent poll by the Daily Telegraph poll suggested Brown was an electoral liability. Add to this the news of retarding economic growth in the first quarters, only compounded in Brown’s cup of woes.
The scale of defeat at Henley was a real surprise. The Labour Party’s, share of votes falling by 11.5 %. Fortunately, mustering of 1066 votes saved the candidate from loosing his deposit.
The elections were due after the Conservative Party’s Boris Johnson assumed London Mayor’s post. Johnson became London Mayor by defeating his opponent by 10,116 votes over the rival Liberal Democrats.
