May 9, 2008
Key targets in the flagship health plan of Welsh Assembly Government have been missed, according to the BBC News report. Milestones in as many as 10 areas like bed blocking, reductions in waits for heart surgery and bowel cancer screening, had not been met by the stipulated deadline (April). ‘Designed For Life’ plan is a 10-year strategy launched in 2005 with specific annual targets.
According to the head of the NHS in Wales, the overall picture was though, of marked improvements in the health service standard. BBC Wales examined the targets that were set for the end of March. The programme found that waits for heart surgery are presently 36 weeks – around nine months – when they should actually be three months. This wait has been cud down from 72 weeks and is expected to reach up to 26 weeks by December 2009. Another target that was missed by the ‘Designed for Life’ is that all heart patients must be checked by a consultant within 24 hours. The assembly government stated it was working towards developing services, which would deliver this.
