New poll indicates young people are ignorant about Mental Health
September 10, 2008
London based Great Ormond Street Hospital recently conducted a poll, which indicated that a large majority of school children could not name a single mental health condition. Almost half of those questioned responded that schools are not educating enough about mental health. More than one fourth of the respondents relied on internet for their source of information on mental health.
“Our findings, which show that nearly half of 12-18 year olds in the UK cannot name a single mental health condition, are both worrying and surprising”, commented Dr John Goldin, a consultant child and adolescent psychiatrist at Great Ormond Street Hospital
Taking this findings seriously, Great Ormond Street Hospital has launched an interactive and comprehensive section about Mental health on their website. Apart from featuring information on symptoms, treatments and other details on mental health diseases, the website would also feature experiences of other teenagers suffering from mental health problems in the form of audio recordings.
