Pensioner takes mobility scooter in the fast lane

March 9, 2009

A 90 year old man had the shock of his life after accidentally straying onto the A27, which features 3 lanes either side of the road and a speed limit of 70 miles per hour, while driving an electric-powered mobility scooter.

The pensioner, Stanley Murphy, started out peacefully rolling along a normal street to buy his daily newspaper when he took a wrong turning. Before he knew what was happening, Murphy had managed to stray onto the busy road, along with cars and lorries zipping past at up to 70 miles per hour.

Murphy was later stopped by a helpful truck driver, who flicked on his hazard lights and stopped in front of the mobility scooter to slow him down. The truck driver, James Dunne, said it looked like Murphy wasn’t going to stop at first, instead it appears he was contemplating overtaking the stopped truck, but in the end Murphy brought the scooter to a stop.

Police came out and gave Murphy a lift home, while Dunne helpfully loaded the mobility scooter onto his truck and drove it to Murphy’s home. No charges were pressed as the police decided that Murphy meant no harm and was merely confused by the situation.
