Those unfortunate workers who are victims of economic slump, there by losing their jobs, are being offered counseling for “recession depression”. Therapists are trained in large numbers amid government fears that the financial crisis could drive up levels of mental illness and long- term unemployment.

Health secretary Alan Johnson along with Work and pensions secretary James Purnnell announced the scheme where by sufferers will be referred to psychotherapists using an advice network in Jobcentres and doctors’ surgeries.

An allotment of extra ₤13 million is provided to improve services, with 3600 extra therapist nurses trained to establish counseling centres in every primary care trust by the end of next year.

Johnson told the Telegraph: “in the current economic downturn, the potential crisis for more people to become anxious or depressed and experience lower levels of mental wellbeing. If someone is feeling down after losing their job, then the best solution is a new job and we’re helping people to find them wherever possible. But in some cases, depression and anxiety can be a barrier to getting another job.”

Already staggering six million adults in the UK have depression or anxiety though many of them are receiving incapacity benefits. Frances Walker, of the Consumer Credit Counseling says: “There is a definite link between debt and depression. Debt is an emotional issue as well as a financial one.”
